Q&A
new york times crossword puzzle clue yesterday: golden globe nominated actress for 1998's the opposite of sex. answer: christina ricci. but aurora and I thought it was phoebe from friends, who's in that and happy endings, both written and directed by don roos. naturally, I could remember all five of the other actors names but not her's and I eventually had to go to target to look on the back of a friends season 5 DVD (I first looked for romy and michelle's high school reunion). answer: lisa kudrow.
relieved, I went to see good dick (part of the sundance series at BAM), written, directed and starring marianna palka, it co-stars jason ritter who plays the drummer who doesn't know he's gay in happy endings (tom arnold, jason ritter's character's dad in happy endings, plays palka's character's dad here). ritter and palka live together, he said during the Q&A, one of many insipid non-answers. I wanted to ask if he has a longer than 8.5 inch penis, a bet his character makes in the movie and wins without visual confirmation (written by his girlfriend), but I was too put off by their responses to other question to participate.
Q: what were the pros and cons of directing and starring?
A: I don't know, I just really enjoyed it.
Q: what was the hardest part of making this movie? [it's about a character who was molested as a child]
A: we just had a lot of fun.

flagpole sitta
why was lip dubbing ever a fad? it began and should have ended with these guys in china singing the backstreet boys (a truly great and necessary video; a return to the age old question: what way?). but after a hard day's work building the internet, the people at vimeo took it upon themselves to make this. I don't want it that way.

just thought
david lynch, jim jarmusch, wes anderson and darren aronofsky's first films all star their friends.
two netflix
you have to love the eclecticism of netflix: last night, I watched the wind will carry us and the proposition. the latter is a western, set in the australian outback, directed by john hillcoat (and written by nick cave, weird!), which starts with a warning that aboriginal people may find some of the images offensive (also weird). hillcoat's next movie is the adaptation of the road by cormac mccarthy.
the wind will carry us is directed to perfection by abbas kiarostami of iran. his signature is long takes of cars driving on winding roads in the distance; he can make a jeep driving up the hill express a different emotion than a motorcycle driving down the hill later. in a better world he would adapt mccarthy's book and everyone would be bored by the coen's no country for old men.

the last paper
I had an existential movie-crisis the other night and in a youtubing rage came across this ("oh, you're taking a video!"). on the verge of giving up on movies forever I found celine dion gargling my heart will go on on german TV and felt restored.

foreign body
web series produced by michael eisner, there will be a new episode every monday-friday for 10 weeks, the prequel to a new book by robin cook (medical thriller author of outbreak) which comes out the day after the series ends. it's super trashy, three women in underwear in the first four minutes (2 episodes), no wikipedia page (although I'm pretty into this) and harder than it should be to find through google.
